A 71-year-old German woman in Gera fell victim to a love scam on an online dating platform in 2024. The Gera Police Inspectorate is currently investigating the case, with the scammer believed to be operating from outside Europe.

According to information transmitted by news aktuell, the fraudster repeatedly asked the victim for large sums of money under various pretexts. The scammer managed to receive several hundred thousand euros from the victim.

The Gera Police Inspectorate urges caution when it comes to money requests, particularly via email, online acquaintances, or from people claiming to be former acquaintances. They advise seeking advice from family, friends, the bank, or the police when interacting with strangers online, especially regarding financial matters.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing by the criminal police in Gera. The victim reported the incident to the Gera police on August 20, 2025.
